Becoming overweight as a child is more likely to be the result of your genes than your lifestyle, study claims.
Researchers from the University College London who looked at 5,000 sets of twins have concluded that genetics are a stronger influence on weight than factors such as upbringing, exercise and diet. The study found that differences in body mass index and waist size in were 77% governed by genes.
Children who are overweight are more likely to be obese in adulthood, raising the risk of certain cancers, heart disease, stroke and diabetes.
An anti-obesity group said regardless of genes, a balanced diet and exercise are vital to maintaining good health.
