Growing round the houses

A new report describes how to grow food on urban housing estates.

A new publication from the Women's Environmental Network describes how urban growing is gathering momentum in social housing.   It includes stories of how to 'green' concrete by placing one-tonne growbags on previously desolate areas and grow a variety of fruit and vegetables.  There are also more ambitious plans for 'edible roofs', with one example already flourishing in Reading.

The schemes are educational, provide cheap food, beautify neighbourhoods, bring communities together and promote healthy eating choices.   The report offers case studies and suggestions about where to find help for organisations who'd like to do something similar.
