The first doctors' surgery to be run from a supermarket in England is opening as part of a six-month pilot.

The first ever GPs' surgery to be located in a supermarket is due to be piloted.

Sainsbury's at Heaton Park in Manchester will run the medical centre in a six-month trial - providing doctors in normal business hours and during two evenings and Saturdays.

Heywood, Middleton and Rochdale Primary Care Trust developed the scheme which uses doctors from local surgeries - the work is in addition to their current roles.

The GPs working from Sainsbury's will have full access to patients' records via their own laptops and be able to make referrals or update records.

The surgery will be located in a fully equipped consultation room at Sainsbury's in-store Pharmacy.
