Regulating complementary therapies: a critical consultation
As a long standing campaigner for the regulation of complementary therapies, The Prince's Foundation for Integrated Health is delighted that the government has announced a new consultation on regulation of practitioners of complementary therapies.
The public will be given the chance to have their voice heard on the issue of three significant complementary therapies, including herbal medicine and acupuncture, that are used regularly by millions of people. More information is available from the Department of Health at www.dh.gov.uk
In line with previous consultations and surveys, we are confident there will be overwhelming support in favour of regulation.
Dr Michael Dixon, the Foundation’s medical director, said:
'There is good evidence for herbal medicine, acupuncture and Chinese medicine in the treatment of some conditions but, as in all healthcare, these therapies require properly trained practitioners.
'Statutory regulation will demand high standards of practice. It will enable the public to identify qualified practitioners, and to feel confident of good quality, safe treatment.
'It is particularly pressing to get regulation in place before the EU Directive on Traditional Herbal Medicinal Products comes into force in 2011. If the system is not in place by then, practitioners and the public will have much reduced access to safe herbal remedies, whether from Western, Chinese or Indian traditions.'

Notes to editors:
1. The Prince’s Foundation for Integrated Health was founded by the Prince of Wales in 1993. Its principal aim is to make sure that all patients can access good integrated healthcare. That means treating patients as whole human beings – paying attention to body, mind and soul. It may include access to proven complementary therapies, but the Foundation does not suggest that is necessarily the best course of action for all conditions and all patients. More information about the Foundation can be found at www.fih.org.uk
