Returning the soul to medicine
Dr Michael Dixon explores what an integrated general practice should look like. He argues that the four central factors are:
- A 'whole person' approach to diagnosis and treatment which recognises the relevance of belief, perception, culture, environment and mindset.
- An open minded approach to treatment which offers the patient the best and most appropriate choice of safe and effective treatments to address the particular needs, whether from conventional and/or complementary medicine.
- An approach which extends beyond the symptom or disease to include a focus on promoting personal health and wellbeing.
- A responsibility for health and wellbeing that extends beyond the consulting room to engage with the wider local community.
