UCL complementary therapy team
Integrated hospital care for cancer patients
The Complementary Therapy Team at University College London Hospital work within cancer services and offers a fully integrated holistic service to patients, their carers and staff. The dynamic ward-based team consists of healers, massage therapists, aromatherapists, relexologists and an art therapist who have direct and usually immediate access to patients.
Patients are supported, including those living with Sickle Cell and Thallassaemia, on an in-patient and out-patient basis by providing information and support with complementary therapy treatments.
An ongoing objective is to provide evidence-based therapies. In 2009 a research project is being conducted, looking at white cell count recovery and quality of life improvements in cancer patients who receive reiki.
The team thrives because it is integrated into the multi-disciplinary team and therefore part of the whole person experience within cancer care .
