Midlothian Sure Start
Support for children and parents in Scotland including healthy eating, complementary therapies and education.
There are many Sure Start projects for under 5s and their parents across the country. The Midlothian Sure Start project is remarkable for its particularly integrated approach. Counselling and access to therapies have given some parents emotional support as they find their way out of drug addiction - or simply to find relief from stress. Events from cookery classes to gardening give extra skills to parents and a better diet to their children.
What sort of organisations run this programme?
There's capacity for any parent and child scheme to adopt some of the ideas from Midlothian Sure Start. Importantly, the project continues to innovate, and is looking at ways to strengthen the community by involving grandparents and others in their work.
