Fit for Life

Fit for life participant in the gym A programme to help patients who wouldn't usually use gym facilties in leisure centres to access them - and impact on longstanding health problems.

Gym trainers in leisure centres are sent on courses to help them advise gym users who have health problems - ranging from obesity to high blood pressure or depression.  Patients receive a referral from their GP allowing them to use the gym facilities for several weeks at a reduced price.

The scheme has been hugely popular in some leisure centres and has meant that people who have previously been shy about going to a gym have been able to access exercise with friendly support and encouragement.  Some participants may begin with as little as 15 minutes exercise per session, but are gradually able to build up their fitness.

What sort of organisations are involved in this project?

This work was previously tried in Belfast, but the scheme wasn't so successful there, perhaps because it covered such a large area.  It seems to have thrived in Derry because of 'word of mouth' - many people with chronic illness have approached their GPs specifically to get referred to the scheme.  This 'exercise on prescription' blueprint could work well in most areas of the country.
