Extra Care - Family Carer Training Programme
Helping carers of people with long term illnesses to cope better and address their own needs.
The health service very often depends on unpaid carers looking after family members for many years. Often kept out of employment and isolated from social networks by their responsibilites, carers risk falling ill themselves. The risks may range from simple back pain (from moving someone around without proper training) to depression and breakdown.
Northern Ireland's ExtraCare service cares for the carers and makes sure they get all the support they are entitled to, as well as offering stress-relieving therapies. Many say that this intervention has prevented the breakdown of home care situations.
What sort of organisations get involved in this work?
ExtraCare Northern Ireland believe they are unique in piloting this kind of work.
